Egypt can be visited all year. The best time depends on what you want: comfortable sightseeing, warm sea, fewer crowds or lower prices.

The short answer

  • Most comfortable for sightseeing: October to April.
  • Busiest and most expensive: late December and early January.
  • Warmest sea without extreme heat: April, May, October and November.
  • Quietest and cheapest: June to August, if you can handle the heat.

For families

School holidays in October, February and April suit most families well. Christmas and New Year are lovely but book up early and cost more.

For couples

March, April, October and November give you warm evenings on deck and comfortable days at the temples.

For divers and beach lovers

The Red Sea is swimmable all year, but the water is warmest from June to October. Spring and autumn combine warm water with comfortable sightseeing.

Summer travel

Summer is not a bad time to visit if you plan for it. We start at dawn, keep the middle of the day for rest and use air-conditioned vehicles throughout. You get emptier sites and better rates.

2027: a special summer

On 2 August 2027 a total solar eclipse passes over Luxor. See our guide to the eclipse.

Holidays to plan around

During Ramadan, some restaurants close during the day and opening hours can change. Travel is still easy, and the evenings are special. Dates move each year, so we check them against your plans.
