The 2027 total solar eclipse in Luxor
What happens on 2 August 2027, why Luxor is one of the best places to watch it, and how to plan around the heat.
Draft: this guide is being reviewed and is not yet indexed by search engines.

On 2 August 2027, a total solar eclipse will cross North Africa and the Middle East. Luxor sits close to the centre of its path, which makes it one of the best places in the world to watch it.
What will happen
For a few minutes around midday, the Moon will cover the Sun completely. The sky will darken, the temperature will drop and the Sun's corona will be visible. In Luxor, totality is expected to last around six minutes, one of the longest totals of this century.
Why Luxor
- Near the centre line, so totality lasts longest.
- Clear skies. August in Upper Egypt is almost always cloudless.
- Somewhere worth being. The temples of Karnak and the Valley of the Kings are a few minutes away.
The challenge: heat and demand
August in Luxor is very hot, often above 40°C in the afternoon. Hotels will fill early, and many observers will travel from around the world.
We plan around both:
- Viewing from a private site on the West Bank with shade, seating and water.
- Certified eclipse glasses for every guest. Looking at the Sun without proper protection, outside totality, can permanently damage your eyes.
- Visits at dawn and dusk, with the middle of each day kept for the eclipse and for rest.
- Hotel rooms held early for guests who confirm.
Cairo or Luxor only?
Cairo is outside the path of totality. You will see a partial eclipse there, but not the corona. Our eclipse trip is based in Luxor, with an optional start in Cairo for the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
Photographing the eclipse
- Use a solar filter on your camera during the partial phases.
- Remove it only during totality, and put it back as soon as the Sun reappears.
- Do not spend all six minutes behind a screen. Look up.
